The Experience

In hot pursuit of adrenalin, in nature.

A zipline canopy tour in the company of soaring eagles, surrounded by Cape fynbos and dramatic mountainscapes. Glide from one platform to the next while our expert guides take care of your safety — no experience needed.

Set in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve near Grabouw in the Elgin Valley, just an hour's drive from Cape Town. When we opened, Lonely Planet ranked it the 2nd best new tourism experience in the world.

Suitable from age 5, with no upper age limit — our oldest flyer so far was 93!

No car? We'll fetch you. Our Cape Town transfers collect you from a central city pickup point (minimum two guests) so you can leave the driving to us — just add them to your booking.

FAQs

Good to know before you fly.

How much does it cost? +
We have a range of options. The easiest way is to check live pricing and availability on our booking page.
How long does it take? +
About 4½ hours for a full group. We can be a little quicker, but we like to give you time to enjoy the mountain.
How do I make a booking? +
The easiest way is to check availability and book online.
Do I need to book in advance? +
Yes please — we arrange guides specifically for your tour time, so arriving without a booking risks us being full. Book online in advance.
Can I pay on the day? +
No — pre-payment confirms your booking and lets us arrange staff. We do offer a 100% refund on direct bookings up to 24 hours before your tour.
What is your cancellation policy? +
Up to 24 hours before your tour, we offer a 100% refund on bookings made directly with us. Bookings through a third party or agent are bound by that agent’s policy.
How do I get to you? +
Take the N2 to the Elgin/Grabouw turn-off (opposite Peregrine Farm Stall, 50km from Cape Town Airport). Turn onto the R321 towards Villiersdorp/Franschhoek and follow it 11km up the mountain to the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve on your left. Open in Google Maps.
What is the minimum / maximum age? +
There’s no maximum age — our record is 93! You just need to manage the 1km walk out of the mountain. Minimum age is 5; children aged 5–9 will usually go tandem with a guide (two tandems per time slot).
I’m scared of heights — can I go tandem with a guide? +
We can offer 2 tandems per tour time. For guide and guest safety, tandems are limited to guests under 50kg. Please email zipline@capecanopytour.co.za if any children under 9 will be on your tour.
Can my child go tandem with me? +
Unfortunately not — if the guide needs to brake, we don’t want you and your child on the cable together. Our guides are great with kids and will take them tandem (and show you how it’s done!).
What is the maximum weight? +
Around 100–110kg per person. It’s not about weight as such, but the size of our harnesses. As an adventure activity, a moderate level of fitness and upper-body and core strength is needed.
How fit do I need to be? +
A reasonable level of fitness. There’s a 1km hike up and out of the mountain after the tour, so moderate fitness plus upper-body and core strength helps.
Do you cater for guests with disabilities? +
Due to uneven terrain and small platforms, we can’t accommodate wheelchair access. Otherwise, please chat to us and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
How many people can you take in a group? +
Up to 9 people per group. If you’re a larger party, we simply split you into consecutive groups who follow one another through the tour.
Can I book a private tour? +
Yes — book a private tour for up to 8 people, with your own guides and vehicle and nobody else on the tour.
Can I do just the ziplining without the 4x4? +
No — the tour starts at 1000m altitude. We transport you up on our safari-style 4x4 and safely back again afterwards.
What happens if the weather is bad? +
Our ops team watches the weather closely. If we cancel, we’ll reschedule or refund you. If we decide to operate and you cancel within 24 hours, the usual policy applies; cancel with more than 24 hours’ notice and we refund 100%. (Direct bookings only — agents may differ.)
What should I wear? Can I bring a backpack? +
Bring warm clothes (Cape mountain weather is unpredictable) and comfortable shoes for the short 1km hike out of the gorge. A small backpack is welcome for phones, layers and water.
Once I’ve started, can I turn around? +
There’s a chance to end early after the 2nd zipline. After that, you complete the tour.
How serious are you about safety? +
Very. We’re industry leaders in safety. Our system is checked daily and regularly assessed by independent engineers, geologists and equipment specialists. We’re members of the African Ropes Course Association (ARCA) and far exceed its requirements. Watch our safety video.
Tell me about the personalised tour video +
Where conditions allow, our guides film along the way and edit a fun, personalised souvenir video — emailed to each guest to download after the tour (an individual video, not a group one).
What’s this about a free tour on my birthday? +
Been on a paid tour before? Keep your certificate and come back for a free (pre-booked) tour on your birthday — or up to three days either side. Bring a paying friend along and you slide for free. Happy birthday!
Do you offer transfers from Cape Town? +
Yes — for a minimum of 2 people, we offer transfers from a central Cape Town location. Check availability or contact us.
How do I buy a gift voucher? +
Give an experience instead of stuff — buy a gift voucher online.
